1. What is the structure of Department of Environment?

 

Our Department is headed by Sri. V.N. Garg, Principal Secretary, Department of Environment at the Government level and Sri. O.P. Varma, Director at the level of the Directorate of Environment.

 

2. What are the main schemes of Directorate of Environment, taken up in the year 2005-06?

 

Various programs, being undertaken by Environment Directorate during 2005-2006 are:

 

a. Environmental education/training/extension and awareness.

 

b. It emphasized on creation of environmental awareness up to grass root level which include celebration of International Biodiversity Day on May 22, 2005, World Environment Day on June 5, 2005, International Ozone Preservation Day on September 16, 2005. An environmental exhibition was organized in the month of April, 2005 at Saharanpur Mahotsava.

 

c. Organization of Education and poster competitions for school children.

 

The scheme was initiated in the year 2000-01 to create massive environmental awareness amongst the school children, their teachers as well as parents. Children have been involved through education and poster competitions at District, Division and State level. School children have been divided into 3 groups i.e. from class-I to V in one group, from Class VI to VIII in other and from class IX to XII are in other group. Separate competitions are being organized for rural and urban group.

 

d. Organizations of Environmental Management Training Programs.

 

These programs are aimed at sensitizing policy makers, planners and field level officers on possible aspects of integrating environment with development issues.

 

e. Conservation Program.

 

f. Environmental Research & Action Program.

 

These include Environmental Research and Action Programme and centrally sponsored scheme for protection of Taj Mahal.

 

Bioremediation of polluted water bodies of Lucknow: an Eco-friendly and sustainable approach.

This project is being implemented through National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow.

 

g. Organisation of Eco-development camps

 

These are aimed at participation of local public in solving environmental problems of it districts of state.

 

3. What are the benefits of environmental management and conservation?

 

It leads to cleaner and healthier surroundings. It results in sustainable development of the area concerned.

 

4. What are biomedical wastes?

 

Any waste which is generated during the diagnosis, treatment or immunization of human being and animals. These are also generated during research activities or in the production or testing of biological material.

 

5. What is health care waste?

 

It included all the waste generated by health care Establishments, research facilities and laboratories.

 

6. Which types of plants and animals are more sensitive to over exploitation then others?

 

The one with longer life span and which bread slowly. For example: wholes and large tropical hardwood trees.

 

7. Which type of landscape produces heat islands?

 

Urban Areas.

 

8. What affects the number of species on an island?

 

Size of the island.

 

9. Which ecosystem is as biologically productive as a tropical rainforest?

 

Coral reef.

 

10. Which ecosystem has the highest species diversity?

 

Rain forests.

 

11. What are pastures of the sea?

 

Coastal waters.

 

12. Which type of ecosystem is biologically the least productive?

 

Very deep lakes.
