Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC), in its recent notification, has prohibited manufacture, trade, import as well as export of household and decorative paints containing lead or lead compounds in excess of 90 parts per million (ppm). Activists, who have been highlighting the dangers of lead in paints used in households, have welcomed the new mandatory 'Regulation of Lead Contents in Household and Decorative Paints Rules, 2016' that was notified by the MOEFCC on November 1. They also claimed that lead paints were a significant cause of lead exposure especially in children, and the new regulation will help in safeguarding the health of vulnerable children and mothers.
